Flip Field Vol. 12 | New World by Flip Field published on 2023-11-17T22:02:07Z November 17th, 1939: Under Nazi occupation, students in Prague organized a demonstration that, although violently suppressed, marked the beginning of Czech resistance against Nazi occupation during WW2. November 17th, 1989: A peaceful student commemoration of the events exactly 50 years prior escalated, becoming the start of the Velvet Revolution, ultimately leading to the downfall of the communist government in Czechoslovakia. November 17th, 2023: Today, we celebrate the incredible bravery of Czech youth who imagined and built a new world for themselves and their descendants with our reimagining's of the "New World Symphony" by the famous Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. Dvořák wrote the piece in his apartment on 327 East 17th Street in New York City while teaching at the National Conservatory of Music. His writings indicate that he was deeply inspired by the African-American spirituals and plantation songs he heard at this time, on which musicologists speculate some of the melodies of the New World Symphony were based. In the end, as some Flip Field members can most definitely relate to, Dvořák disliked the urban American setting and terminated his contract after three years to return to Bohemia. It’s our distinct honor to present the results of this challenge to you, and we hope it serves as a reminder, as it does to us, to never underestimate your power to effect positive change in the world.
