Interview with Alton Watkins, 12 February 2018 (SA 69/1/8/1) by Essex Record Office published on 2018-10-12T14:31:59Z Oral history interview with Alton Watkins recorded by Evewright Arts Foundation (EAF) for their Caribbean Takeaway Takeover project. Alton was born in Trinidad in 1929. He worked as a printer, and reared pigs to earn his fare to move to England. He travelled on the SS Lucania in 1956 and worked as a printer in London while studying to gain a teaching qualification. He then moved to Grays to work as a schoolteacher, until his retirement. This interview covers information about his life in Trinidad; his journey to England; his experiences in London and the racial disharmony at the time; his move to Grays and his work as a schoolteacher; and reflections on his life as a whole.
