Milan Day 2 Crisis X Critique: Round Table by Elevator Radio published on 2023-04-28T16:33:52Z Young designers are entering the industry under a cloud of crisis: from the climate to Covid to the cost of living, via political extremism and housing shortages. DAE encourages its students to think critically about design. But what does it mean to be a critical designer in this context of global uncertainty and instability? This theme opens up a fairly broad range of possible questions for our roundtable discussion: Where did the idea that "design can save the world" come from and why is it problematic? How do we design consciously for a future that is so uncertain? What role can critique play in helping us navigate towards a brighter future and is this even possible? Do designers have a responsibility to be politically engaged and, if so, how can we do that while making a living? And why on earth are we all here in Milan when there's a global climate crisis?
