Sounds of Dayton Daniele Sofer Dayton, OH Sound scholars, urban architects and composers alike have long been fascinated by the impact of sound on quality of life in urban centers. Particular cities sound particular ways. The “Sounds of Dayton” installation performs a series of inquiries into Dayton’s urban soundscape to understand the make-up of the city’s sonic ecology. This research illuminates the impact sound and music have had in the city of Dayton, Ohio and sound’s role in its urbanization. Collection Methods: Phase 1 - Sound Recordings - Composed Soundwalks - Composed Soundscapes - Anonymized collection and analysis of demographic data Phase 2 - Interlocutor interviews with Dayton residents (musicians and non-musicians) Phase 3 - Coordinated study of Dayton's soundscape over time, as well as documented accounts from musicians and artists to inform how, when, and why changes in the city's sound have taken place.
