Wit by Calvin Hitchcock published on 2016-04-15T01:36:02Z Composed for Cedarville University Theatre Department's production of Wit, April 2016 Diane Conrad Merchant, director All music composed by Calvin Hitchcock Nate Chester, audio engineer Program notes Rather than simply underscoring the many flashbacks or asides in "Wit", I chose to only write an opening song and a closing song. Both are settings of John Donne's "Death Be Not Proud." The ensemble choice was in part a nod to Donne and the Baroque period, but also includes the cold modern edge of the electric guitar, a reference to the sterile hospital setting. All are treble instruments, illustrating both the fragility of the human body wracked by cancer, but also the femininity of the protagonist Vivian.
