Transition (Album Sampler) by Boddhi Satva published on 2015-06-29T12:08:05Z Dance music’s founding father of Ancestral Soul offers up his sophomore studio album “Transition”, another rousing body of work which delves deep and wide across a spectrum of soul and African music. Boddhi Satva’s debut full-length studio 2011/2012 album Invocation, released on Vega Records/BBE Music attracted endorsement from some of music’s most respected tastemakers, Gilles Peterson being one of them. It set the bar high for where Boddhi Satva continues to take audiences currently on the new album Transition. And as before, the roster of names contributing to the set is a-class. Nigerian pop star Davido and Ivorian Coupé Decalé forerunner DJ Arafat featured together on Naughty wave the flag high for West Africa – It’s a pulsating track leading the current wave of dance-leaning club music popular in the region and beyond. For the signature tradi/modern African sounds Boddhi turns to renowned elder statesmen such as Les Nubians (Cameroon), Kaysha (DRC), Nelson Freitas (Cape Verde), Amos Kangala (Central African Republic) or the new prince of the Malian/Ivorian scene Mohamed Diaby (Ivory Coast). Because of Boddhi Satva’s unique position and heritage he can and does genuinely draw from a range of geographic and cultural influences. Born Central African Republican, his talents as a DJ remain in demand from Doha to Luanda. Transition bears the mark of a producer who takes his time cultivating real bonds in the numerous destinations where his work takes him. For example, Kenyan emerging solo star Lady Karun sings and co-writes Sound of the Heart. It’s a direct outcome from Boddhi Satva’s participation in Coke Studio Africa – a music reality television series set in Nairobi, which pitted the two together for a unique re-interpretation of classic and new school music. For a further unexpected twist, Declaim and Georgia Anne Muldrow pair up to contribute to When the Lights, a song that sees Boddhi reaching boldly and convincingly into more soulful Hip-hop territory. Staying in a similar realm he also taps the sensual allure of R&B singer/songwriter Teedra Moses on Skin Diver. None other than UK Soul architect Omar Lyefook MBE crowns Transition’s soul diversion with the lead singleBenefit. Frequent collaborator Ade Alafia Adio delivers a stirring oration on the album’s title track paying tribute to Boddhi’s father. His life and sudden passing early in 2014 inspired the trajectory of Transition, the making of which began in 2012 in Central Africa where Boddhi had returned for the first time in 12 years. “My father used to play a lot of Jazz, Soul, Disco and of course African Rhumba. Outside of the house I listened to Soukouss, Ndombolo, Hip-Hop and R&B,” recalls Boddhi of the upbringing he enjoyed in his native country. “My father’s love for good music led me to develop a special sensitivity an ear to different cultures and sounds around the world.” This album is the best case for what happens when the best of Black music in all its forms is allowed to merge into the purpose for which it was created: to enrich, to elevate, to evolve…. to transition.
