"Right Direction," Davis's forthcoming new single, took shape during his first ever writing session with Kimbra Johnson (aka Kimbra). Prior to the session, she'd described a friend who was having trouble finding a life-long passion. Since she and Davis have music to invest their time and hard work into, the duo decided to write the song from the point of view of this friend, that is, a person who desires to work hard but doesn't have an outlet for all of that pent up energy. "I think we have all felt that way from time to time," says Davis.
Davis was also into running marathons at this time, so that image and mood found its way into the song. Opening with a crispy drum beat, acoustic guitar, plunky vibraphone and Davis' smoky vocals, the chorus gives way to bassy piano chords and soaring harmonies that ask, "How long will I run without knowing if I'm running in the right direction?"
An alternative version of "Right Direction" will also appear on Kimbra's forthcoming new album 'Primal Heart', out April 20. Benjamin Lazar Davis's debut solo album 'Nothing Matters' will be released on May 4 via 11A Records.
