SALONIKA (music by Avi Amon, words by Julia Gytri) by Avi Amon published on 2015-02-20T20:20:47Z Salonika, Greece. 1941. Axis powers move into the city as its Sephardic Jewish population prepares for the horrors to come. A young boy and girl escape the tensions of the world around them by disappearing into a realm of make-believe constructed from light, filled with shadow puppets and talking animals. However, this world is not at all a refuge for those within it: the boy and girl find that their main characters, a prince and princess in this land, are equally troubled. The young royals escape into an “invented” future, where a girl and boy, much like themselves, tell stories to help them make sense of what is happening around them. Experimenting with Ladino folklore, mixing languages, Ottoman shadow play, and musical fusions of Middle Eastern and electronic sounds, Salonika blurs the line between reality and fiction and explores the inevitable ways we are all connected through the power of storytelling.
