Moment of Impact by Australian National Maritime Museum published on 2024-07-18T00:51:05Z Six decades ago, a fatal collision between two Australian naval ships saw 82 sailors perish and in a matter of minutes, forged memories of heroism and tragedy felt to this day. On a moonless night in February 1964, the HMAS Voyager, a destroyer, was cut in two and sunk by the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne, during naval exercises off the NSW south coast. The Melbourne was almost twice as long and close to six times the size of the Voyager. The disaster sparked years recriminations, court action and two royal commissions. To honour those who passed that night, author and broadcaster Mike Carlton recorded interviews with five survivors of the Voyager-Melbourne tragedy. We’ve called the podcast 'Moment of Impact'.
