01 In Living Colour by Andrew James Clark published on 2015-01-28T13:20:33Z In Living Colour (2015) - Andrew Clark (b.1994) Organ - Rashaan Allwood Accordion - Matti Pulkki In Living Colour is a short character piece which seeks to explore the use of simple harmony in unconventional and unorthodox ways. The result of this is an abundance of unexpected, unpredictable and overwhelming amount of “colour”. Although technically speaking the piece relies heavily on the use of bitonality, polytonality, extensions and even some modality, my compositional process neglected focusing on these principles and simply allowed my ears to dictate desirable the combinations of tertian harmony. From the perspective of a composition student, this piece is clearly a result of working diligently to shift my own musical comprehension from a strict tonal orientation, to one which begins to approach “free chromaticism”.
