The Juilliard School; B.M. Indiana University) writes orchestral, chamber, vocal, collaborative, & choral works--as well as sound art with video artists, photojournalists, and choreographers--for ensembles ranging from Kronos Quartet to Beaux Arts Trio, from Cabrillo Festival Orchestra to Orchestra of St. Lukes--with premieres and performances of her work in concert halls on five continents. Alexandra du Bois is Chair of the Composition and Theory Departments at the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts where she also teaches a private studio of composition students. Described as "an intense, luminous composer" (L.A.Times) and “a painter who knows exactly where her picture will be hung,” (New York Times), Alexandra du Bois’ music is often propelled by issues of indifference and inequality throughout the United States and the world. “This music attempts to be a conscience in a time of oblivion. She dared to counter abuses of moral authority with an internal, personal sound using the string quartet as a witness, a reminder, that music and creativity are part of a continuing web of responsibility,” stated Kronos Quartet founder and violinist David Harrington in 2003 after the premiere of du Bois' first quartet commissioned by Kronos.
