« They told me Soldat, you want to become a star ? – Then you have to rap in French or English – I should forget where I’m from ?». Determined words by this former French literature student at the University of Ouagadougou, son of a Burkina Faso Independence fighter, and grandson of a Burkinabé tirailleur, proud of his language and culture.
In his lyrics, he talks straight about Africa’s pillaged ressources, forced mariages, Ouagadougou’s street kids, but he also praises the bountiful return of the rainy season. Themes he shares with featured artists Anny Kassy (https://www.facebook.com/annykassare), Conakry’s unique lyricist, Togolese Elom 20ce (http://www.elom20ce.com/), and French MC and beatmaker <a href="https://soundcloud.com/filsdubeton" target="_blank">Fils du Béton</a>.
Joey Le Soldat is hip hop at his very core. For over a decade, he has been fine tuning his craft, first as a member of various rap groups in his teen years, then gravitating among Ouagadouhou’s underground sound systems and freestyle sessions. In 2009 he wins the Waga Hip Hop Festival clash contest award. Le rappeur burkinabé JOEY le SOLDAT sort BURKIN BÂ, un album aux sonorités Hip Hop, Electro ou Ragga, produit par les beatmakers français Redrum, DJ Form, 76’os et masterisé à Los Angeles par Dave Cooley à qui l’on doit le son du célèbre label Stones Throw (Madlib, Mf Doom, JDilla, Dam Funk...).
« On m’a dit Soldat, tu veux devenir une star ? - Il faut que tu rappes en français, en anglais - Que j’oublie d’où je viens ? ». Des paroles déterminées pour cet ancien étudiant en lettres modernes à l’université de Ouagadougou, fils d’un combattant pour l’indépendance du Burkina Faso et petit-fils de tirailleur burkinabé, fier de sa langue et de sa culture.
Dans ses textes, il parle sans détours du pillage des richesses en Afrique, des mariages forcés, des enfants des rues de Ouagadougou mais chante aussi le retour de la saison des pluies. Des thèmes partagés en featuring avec Anny Kassy, l’artiste au flow unique de Conakry, avec le rappeur togolais Elom20ce et avec Fils du Béton, MC et beatmaker français.
HIP HOP, JOEY le SOLDAT l’est profondément. Depuis plus de dix ans, il peaufine son art, d'abord dans les groupes de rap de son adolescence puis dans l’underground des sound systems de Ouagadougou ou dans les sessions de free-style (vainqueur du concours WagaHipHopFestival en 2009). Impressionnant en live, il partage la scène avec Gaël Faye, Casey ou le groupe de Hip Hop New Yorkais DAS EFX, lors de sa dernière tournée française au côté de Art Melody et de leur groupe Waga 3000.
L'album BURKIN BÂ propulse aujourd’hui JOEY le SOLDAT parmi les jeunes artistes africains qui créent le son de demain.
