Smart Mix 11: DJ The Tornado by smartbar published on 2012-07-30T18:05:28Z Smart Mix 11: DJ The Tornado BASSWEIGHT takes place every first Thursday of each month at Smart Bar in Chicago. Its mission is to preserve and share the “foundation sounds” of bass music through programming focused on deep dubstep, grime, UK garage, and drum & bass. Presented by Brüt Force Family members DJ The Tornado, DJ Sushi, and Whoa-B, it also aims to cultivate a sense of community in its audience of enthusiastic club-goers with support from local, national, and global DJs and MCs. Tornado began putting on the night in April 2011, and a year later found himself with the opportunity to put on the night at Smart Bar, a Chicago clubbing institution. This mix comes just days before Brüt Force takes over the Funktion 1 system for an evening of sub-bass pressure, with very special guest Seven. With releases on high-profile labels such as Tempa and Black Box, Seven makes his Chicago debut hot on the heels of his debut album "Evolution". A word on the mix... "I put this mix together to show what Bassweight is all about. I wanted to represent the full spectrum of music that I play at our night, and to engage people who might otherwise be dismissive of 'dubstep,' which has a bit of a negative connotation nowadays. I've been listening to dubstep since roughly 2005, and many producers and DJs have strayed from the scene's foundation. Though I'm not judgmental of those who have gone in a more commercial direction, it's not really the type of music I want to hear when I go to a dubstep night. With Bassweight, we want to represent that foundation sound and foster a community spirit that made the scene so inviting to people, and so exciting to be around. I tried my best to play all sorts of tunes under the dubstep umbrella to show there is something for everybody in this music - there are some techy tunes, a couple aggressive tracks, some deeper ones, then ended with some UK garage and grime as well as a few Seven cuts back-to-back so you can see the diversity in his productions. I also did my best to play recent tracks to show just how much good music is coming out of our scene at the moment. I hope you enjoy, and to see you on the dancefloor at Smart Bar for Bassweight the first Thursdays of the month!" 1.
