Honey Child's timewarp: heritage cooking by SarahaMashman published on 2020-06-14T11:34:31Z Grandma Wilma taught Toni to bake a sweet potato pie. Granny Ivy’s beef enchiladas were the first meal made in a new home. Toni, “an American Creole from Hawaii, by way of Las Vegas, with many stops in between,” is joining a strong family line of matriarchs who learnt from their extended family, and the domestic genius of many, mostly from Louisiana, Texas, Mexico, and California. A young Toni sat in the circles with generations of her family, learning first to shell peas and peel sweet potatoes, progressing to the Smokehouse and pickling. But Toni was also learning stories and lessons that go with each traditional recipe. Now based in lutruwita/Tasmania, Toni’s transporting the community through time back to her grandmother's kitchen.
