Zaara Street Power Station - Clarrie McLennan - 21 July 1989 by UONCC published on 2015-09-14T03:03:50Z Interview by Louise Parker in 1989 with Clarrie Currie McLennan about Zaara Street Power Station in Newcastle East. Clarrie was born in Newcastle and in 1897 worked at Zaara Street Power Station from 1924 to 1962. Zaara Street Power Station in Newcastle started generating power in 1915, its generating capacity was increased as needed until 1959 when reductions began. Finally in 1976 all equipment and buildings were retired. Clarrie describes his working life at the power station, the working conditions, the recreation and sport played with colleagues, and impact of the Great Depression. The Margaret Henry Oral History Archive is a collection of audio tapes, transcripts, summaries and essays that were part of the Oral Histories Open Foundation Course (1986-1989). Margaret Henry was a history lecturer at the UON in the 1980s. The oral history tapes have been digitised by Cultural Collections, UON Library and made freely available to the wider global research community thanks to the generosity of The Vera Deacon Regional History Fund. The wider collection of Margaret Henry Oral History Archive – over 220 in total and with many stories of Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and its surrounds and records voices describing the Regions cultural, intellectual and social life.
