Teklife Till Tha Next Life Vol 2 is the second installment in Taso’s compilation series featuring fellow members of the legendary Chicago footwork establishment Teklife. The Los Angeles-based producer, whom has been part of the crew since 2012, showcases his own work alongside collaborations with young blood DJ Manny and founders DJ Spinn and the late DJ Rashad. Many motifs of footwork culture both past and present are explored: Revamped acid house, classic call and response chants, and samples flipped inside out. Uplifting piano progressions, amen breaks, and other nods to UK rave and jungle culture also meet, taking London sound palates to a Chicago chop shop. While half of the tracks are solo efforts, the other half embrace the crucial collaborative spirit of Teklife. An MPC, a few keyboards, and a bag of weed between friends has long been the environment responsible for the bulk of classic footwork music, and that’s the same place this compilation comes from. Teklife Till Tha Next Life Vol. 2 is both a document of Taso’s respect and love for Chicago’s forward-thinking subculture, as well as proof that he is also part of the force keeping it innovating modern music.
