Schranz

Schranz is having a moment. Uploads tagged #schranz on SoundCloud jumped more than 80% in 2025, according to the latest Music Intelligence Report. But what is it? Schranz is a distorted, percussion-heavy variant of hard techno built on 150+ BPM tempos, a specific gnarled percussion loop and, increasingly, euphoric breakdowns. And the sound is packing rooms from Sao Paulo to Sydney.

The sub-genre traces back to 1997 Germany, when Frankfurt DJ Chris Liebing and his friend DJ Toe — then working at the beloved Boy Records — coined the term on Chris’ show on the Cologne-based radio station Evosonic. Seeking a better way to describe the more distorted techno sound they were hearing from acts like Surgeon and Regis, the term’s progression began with “Shreddert” (translating to “shredding”), which then morphed into the untranslatable “Schranzig,” and eventually landed at “Schranz.” The final iteration earned its own section at Boy Records, right next to techno. In December 1997, Chris threw a now-historic party at the legendary Omen club titled Birthday Schranz, and the name stuck.

HEAR CHRIS LIEBING TELL THE STORY OF SCHRANZ’S BIRTH AND MORE IN HIS SOUND ADVICE INTERVIEW

In the early 2000s, the catalyst for Schranz’s devolution into distortion was a feedback loop on the dancefloor. DJs would play already-overdriven records faster and louder, while young producers in the crowd raced home to recreate the sound. As such, the tracks they went on to release got pushed further into the red the next weekend. Faster, fiercer and filled out — the genre spiraled from there.

Today’s version of Schranz is more varied. Cologne’s Cloudy, who grew up on indie rock, argues Schranz is less monotonous than outsiders assume. Sharing with SoundCloud, Cloudy explains, “There is actually a lot of groove, tension building and even a nostalgic feeling.”

As tastemaking collaborators, Cloudy and 240KM/H label head Adrián Mills style themselves as “mami and papi” of the scene. Musically, they both pull in Latin influences and nods to Spanish mákina, while pushing forward a signature face-to-face setup with two DJs layering tracks in real time.

While its main creators are German, the appetite for Schranz reaches far beyond. Munich’s klangkuenstler sold out a 15,000-capacity Madrid show in under an hour, and his Stargate-themed Outworld production has landed in São Paulo, New York and Ibiza. For newcomers, Kobosil’s relentless sets and KUKO’s dark, euphoric builds round out a scene that continues to develop, and is no longer underground.

Discover the hard-hitting sound of modern Schranz with this collection of tracks from the scene’s leading DJs and producers, including klangkuenstler, Cloudy, Adrián Mills, Andres Campo, KUKO, Viper XXL and much more.
