De La Soul, the pioneering New York hip-hop group, is collaborating with SoundCloud on an exclusive remix opportunity. Celebrating 25 years of their album ‘Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump,’ De La Soul has unleashed the stems to album track “All Good?” — a soulful, uplifting cut featuring legendary funk vocalist Chaka Khan — and is ready to hear your take on reimagining their sound.
Reflecting on the legacy of ‘Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump’ and the making of “All Good?,” the group’s Kelvin “Posdnuos” Mercer shares, “It’s definitely a blessing to be able to look at where you were then while standing in your ‘now.’ This song holds a special place in listeners’ hearts not only because of the amazing Chaka Khan participating, but because it’s a great song. The union between De La and her helped birth something that will eventually outlive us.”
As far as the inspirations behind the song and how it came together, Posdnuos remembers how he first got started with how he “wanted the beat to feel,” going on to pattern the beat after “Moshitup” by Just Ice featuring KRS-One.
“I always loved that groove,” he explains. “After having the beat ready, I started listening to different instrument sounds to see what would lock in, and the pattern of the guitars locked in perfectly.”
Interestingly enough, the group was originally going to put OutKast and Goodie Mob on the song. Posdnuos recalls, “We actually had a session where some of the guys came in to write to it. We then figured it could be better to have the Dungeon Family cook something up for that union, so we started thinking of who could possibly sing on it with Dave [Jolicoeur] and I rhyming. Chaka came into the picture and the rest as they say… Once we had Pino Palladino, who played bass on D’Angelo albums, locked in the groove even tighter, we were up and running with a classic!”
How De La Soul Revolutionized Hip-Hop With Innovative Sampling, Style and Self-Expression
De La Soul is one of hip-hop’s most beloved groups, with decades of production, performance and hit tracks together. Forming in late 1980s New York, the trio of Kelvin “Posdnuos” Mercer, Vincent “Maseo” Mason and the late David “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur blended jazz, poetry and alternative hip-hop to kaleidoscopic effect.
When they collaborated with foundational hip-hop DJ/producer Prince Paul on their platinum-selling 1989 debut album, ‘3ft High and Rising,’ they created a masterpiece of the genre with their psychedelic, sample-packed collection of beats and rhymes, including tracks like “Me Myself and I” and “The Magic Number.” The album is so influential, in fact, that in 2010, it was selected by the United States Library of Congress for the National Recording Registry, which catalogs recordings of “cultural, historic and aesthetic significance.”
After the runaway success of ‘3ft High and Rising,’ De La Soul released critically acclaimed albums such as 1991’s ‘De La Soul Is Dead,’ 1996’s ‘Stakes Is High’ and 2004’s ‘The Grind Date,’ and reached new audiences through their 2005 Grammy Award-winning collaboration with British animated electronic group Gorillaz, “Feel Good Inc.”

“We’re looking for something that feels fresh and different from another perspective,” Posdnuos adds. “It’s no different than when we take songs and sampled, chopped and reconstruct it. We now want to see what fun can be had doing the same with our song.”
