#ChildAbuse: 'Society seems to accept and condone violence' - Shiva Kumar by Radio Sputnik published on 2017-09-28T11:09:05Z Almost three-fourths of all children in the world experience violence each year. These are the new findings of the global initiative, called Know Violence in Childhood. According to the research, almost two billion children suffer from abuse yearly, both in rich and poor countries. Most often, this includes corporal punishment at home, fighting at school, bullying or sexual abuse. The study points out that corporal punishment is the most common case of abuse both in industrialized countries and across Asia and Africa. Peer violence is also widespread among minors and affects more than 200 million schoolchildren between the ages of nine and eleven. The report attributes the high rates of violence towards children partly to the lack of response to it and prevention measures on a state level. It, however, did noy single out violence to children as a result of conflict or crimes such as slavery and trafficking. Radio Sputnik discussed the issue with Shiva Kumar, global co-chair of Know Violence in Childhood, an Initiative, established as a collective response by individuals from multilateral institutions, concerned about the lack of investment in effective violence prevention strategies.
