My microphones are hidden beneath a large corvid roost in England, near the River Severn. At midnight, the surrounding villages, towns and cities erupt in celebration. On a nearby farm, a shotgun is fired into the air. The more I listen to this scene—to the restless fear and intimidation of other species—the more I understand it as a warning: a présage for 2020, when nature reminded us of our rightful place. Mark Ferguson is a UK-based wildlife sound recordist and sound artist, bestknown for his evocative species recordings.
