You know that meme where Squidward watches from his window as Spongebob and Patrick have all kinds of fun? That’s essentially what this song is about. It's a song about picking up your life and moving from a place you've known all your life (say, New York City) and relocating 300+ miles away to a city that could not be more dissimilar. From afar, all you can do is rot away watching on social media as other bands play shows at your favorite venues back home that you could not attend. In many ways, this song is about homesickness, but also how the crush of isolation can distort tremendously. Musically, this song is one of the heaviest songs in the entire Gooseberry catalog, and owes a great debt to Soundgarden.
Brooklyn-based trio Gooseberry, formed in 2019, melds alternative rock, grunge, and blues to craft their distinctive sound. Comprising Asa Daniels (guitar, vocals), Evin Rossington (drums), and Will Hammond (bass), the band has racked up millions of streams and has garnered praise from editorial stalwarts Galore, Under the Radar, and more. They've become integral to NYC's music scene, headlining venues like Bowery Ballroom, as well as supporting notable touring acts such as Ringo Starr, BabyJake, and Tanner Usrey. They have also played major festivals, including Bourbon & Beyond and Hogs For The Cause. In September 2024, Gooseberry released their debut full-length album, All My Friends Are Cattle. The record has already been streamed 2.5M+ times and counting. This debut showcased the expansive distance that the band can cover, from punch-you-in-the-mouth punk rock to lyrically-driven singer-songwriter to atmospheric prog rock. Glide declared that “Gooseberry is positioned to have a significant role in the modern rock scene.” Now boasting 70K+ monthly listeners and major festival appearances under their belt, Gooseberry has been hard at work on their eagerly anticipated sophomore LP. With a new record on the way and tours taking them all over the US, Canada, and Europe, 2026 is shaping up to be their biggest year to date.
Lyrics:
I’ve been waking up tired
I’ve been dead asleep
I’ve been talking for hours
With ghosts who disagree
Trapped in a glass cage
Forced to watch the world move on without me
Close my eyes, the mountains blow away
I open them now and then I’m back to the beginning
'Cause I’ve been standing on these fault lines
I’ve been burning in the shade
I’ve been slowly losing my mind
I’m about to detonate
I’ve been walking for miles
Haven’t moved one step
I can feel the walls closing in
And I can’t catch my breath
'Cause I’ve been standing on these fault lines
I’ve been burning in the shade
I’ve been slowly losing my mind
I’m about to detonate
So you live to die another death
For all its twists and turns this life repeats itself
Remember only time has the last say
And a weed is just a flower that’s born in the wrong place
'Cause I’ve been standing on these fault lines
I’ve been burning in the shade
I’ve been slowly losing my mind
I’m about to detonate
I’ve been standing on these fault lines
I’ve been burning in the shade
I’ve been standing on these fault lines
