Life begins with infinite possibility. With each stage of development, with each experience of infancy, and with each life-decision, more limitation and more finite potential is placed on the life. In the end, we become merely who we are. Correspondingly, this release, Entropy, evolves within its own lifespan of potential from chaotic beginnings to the inevitable singular disorder of death.
Blackfoot/Dene artist, activist, and Lethbridge-alumni, Lauren Crazybull, now residing in Edmonton, AB, invited solo electronic act, An Ant And An Atom, to create an accompanying musical performance for her art exhibit, Entropy, which is now being released with a handmade art zine featuring pieces from the art show. The piece spans electronic noise, drone, contemporary classical, and ambient genres into a 25-minute mass of sound, recalling sounds of Daniel Menche, Ben Frost, and William Basinski. Though the first half is abrasive with loops, distortions, and shimmering attacks of noise, around the half-way mark a set of sombre strings fade out of the disarray into a beautifully mournful adagio that gradually returns to the chaos. Mastered by Krzysztof Sujata (Valiska).
An Ant And An Atom is the nearly decade long solo project of Sean Warkentine, based in Lethbridge, AB, Canada, which has begun to make a mark on the Alberta music scene, charting on Earshot national charts, appearing at Alberta music festivals, Electric Eye, Sled Island, and Endless Bummer, and performing alongside diverse acts, including Big Brave, Valiska, Technical Kidman, Bitter Fictions, Pigeon Breeders, Jung People, and many others. This is by far the noisiest release of his catalogue so far, but comes informed by his BA in music, regular improvised performances as a co-host of CKXU 88.3FM radio show, Something to Write Home About, film soundtrack work, and numerous other musical projects.
