The Lectric Monks The Lectric Monks Pretoria The Lectric Monks is a South African upbeat dance folk band formed in Pretoria, Gauteng in 2013. The group features a 7 piece ensemble with various instruments. Drawing from roots rock, folk, classical, blues, indie, jazz and psychedelic music, the band's image and sound evoke a nostalgic blend of music of the past with today’s modern styles, creating an upbeat dance experience for all. The band's name is based on a character from Douglas Adam’s Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, a being from a planet very far from the Earth, coincidentally humanoid, designed to believe anything. The group's first show was played November 1, 2013 at Rafters Stage, Pretoria opening for Die Heuwels Fantasties. The Lectric Monks started out as a two roommates (Francois van der Merwe and Gareth Peacock) sitting on a living room sofa, improvising lyrics with nothing but a Ukulele and a passionate love for music. They started jamming as The Lectric Monks since 2013 officially, once they had recruited lead guitarist, Henk Oosthuizen, violinist, Robyn Thomas and percussion and vocalist, Liza van der Walt. The 5-piece changed to a 7-piece when the band called on the drumming skills of Martin Raath and Michael Thomas on bass and they continued to gig where ever music needed to be heard.
