Xevious Cuboid pıoqnɔ snoıʌǝx St Helens Fresh from Dead Fly Recordings comes the mysterious Xevious Cuboid's Cityscapes, complete with Blade Runner-esque artwork. The album strikes a happy balance between stargazing, brooding electronica, and more playful, often heavy techno. There are real moments of beauty in the former; 'Song For Zero' pulsates along on a simple yet satisfying bassline and enchanting lead before a swathe of melody washes over the final minute. A smooth arpeggiated guitar sound leads 'Song For Booniums', which accompanies a nice snappy drum beat. 'Dolphin Soup' has a great Acid vibe with swirling pads and dissonant bass swells. Of the more playful side of the album, tracks like 'Twilight Racer' certainly sound like the title suggests, evoking real Tron-like imagery (and more accurately than Daft Punk's recent soundtrack at that). 'Toe Jam Football' could easily be the soundtrack to a shelved Sega classic, and houses a splendid drum solo in the mid-section. The impressive thing about 'Cityscapes' is the attention to detail throughout. Indeed, the inclusion of a Yellow Magic Orchestra cover points to a passion analogue equipment and stereo field experimentation, which makes for a very satisfying listen.
