Istanbul
Wreckage is a sound system, lacking in equipment but never in spirit. Even without a generator, it never loses its energy.
Okay, let’s be frank. Wreckage is not a sound system in the true sense of the term and quite often, and for extended periods, it has been completely void of energy.
What is it then? Wreckage itself is not entirely sure of this. It is - more or less- for a group of people, who spend an awful lot of time together, enjoy similar interests and share a similar sense of fun and who, despite holding various jobs, have become true experts of slacking, a means of involving others and making public, what they have so far had fun of enjoying in private. In sum it is a means of breaking out of closed group dynamics and opening out to the world. Wreckage is open to involvement and transforms itself and flourishes by contributions of those that join in.
A lengthy description is unnecessary. Suffice it to say, as it involves several people, it has been influenced in one way or the other from the same sub-cultures and movements that emerged in the last 50-60 years that has informed, influenced and left its mark on the reader of this introduction (who found his/her way here through some of our friends). At a fundamental level, Wreckage questions dominant, hegemonic, popular ways of “living”, “doing”, “relating” and of course “leisure and entertainment” and seeks and experiments with alternatives. In a nutshell, Wreckage is a child of the city and its nights, alleys and streets; a no gooder that won’t ever make something out of its life; a trouble maker that likes to upset the status-quo.
Hoping to see the days of self-organised, uncompromised, sponsorless, no nonsense “free-parties” that has no care for profit and consumption and of technivals organised by local sound systems, Wreckage got tired of complaining of the state of things in Istanbul and decided to contribute to the development of a scene that will make these possible. When your paths cross, it will be working to fulfil a simple desire; to be able to enjoy electronic dance music, other than the uninspired, trite, easy listening stuff spinning at every popular club and genres that periodically become fashionable as its “alternative”, without having to pay high cover charges and spend a fortune over drinks – to multiply sounds that we hear “oh! so rarely”, and every now and then, to lay the weight of the world aside and dance ‘till our legs bear us no more, alongside others we feel an affinity with, for to the pure fact of sharing a space and time of revelry.
