The Wha’s are an indie-rock quintet based in Helsinki, Finland. With music sprung out of a feel for rhythm, an ear for melody and a punkish attitude, labeling is as intriguing as it is difficult. Although a line connecting The Clash with The Smiths and The Strokes would eventually reach The Wha’s. Gordon Raphael simply calls the music “excellent”.
The Wha’s have made a name for themselves as an energetic and inspired live band. The finnish music blog Echoes confessed to “having to surrender, fall to the floor and raise a white flag.” But The Wha’s in concert do not take any prisoners.
The Wha’s have always taken a stand for their personal beliefs and turned those into lyrics. Songs like Dead White Boys, anti-racist The Waste Land, Pent-Up Boy and The Last of the Rebels are socially conscious poems that adds another dimension to their music.
And if you’d ask them where they see themselves in five years, the answer would be “everywhere”.
