how to capture the memory of abandoned spaces? at the huwei sugar factory, erstwhile dormitories and warehouses are given over to birds, insects, and falling leaves never swept, tatami mats swelling and bursting with humidity, wooden walls buckling. because the space has been converted to a public park, we also hear a karaoke sometimes near, sometimes far away, contending with cicadas for attention. when we attend to the space, what do we hear? by manipulating the sources, i attempt to capture the phantom life of what was once a flourishing industrial village, now a park for a bustling little town. students on motorcycles, tourists, and locals all visit, but theirs is a different space than the one we might remember
