Ryan Bisio knows music. His degree in contemporary music, ten studio releases, and performances with Grammy Award winning artists over the last fifteen years proves it.
He also knows basketball. As a former collegiate and professional player, his prowess as a dynamic college basketball coach is now what keeps him in the news. As head men’s basketball coach for College of the Redwoods, Bisio was nominated the 2020 California Community College Coach of the Year, while winning the Golden Valley Conference and Conference coach of the Year awards in back-to-back seasons.
His first two seasons as a college head coach.
On September 23, 2022, Ryan released a stand-alone single titled, ‘Reconciled.’ The song settles into a genuine ease and sweet spot in his songwriting approach. Bisio said of the song,” ‘Reconciled’ was born during a confusing transition into new beginnings. The idea that one way or another, life will slowly place a broader context on singular life experiences whether we are a part of shaping the greater context or not. It is a plea for closure. Yet, at its heart, ‘Reconciled’ is also trying to remind us to trust the process of change which, at times, can feel radical and uncomfortable. Being open to things we don’t fully understand. Allowing time to color in the empty spaces.
In October of 2017 Bisio released a studio EP titled, Bona Fide. Bisio wrote and performed material for Bona Fide as the opening act for Grammy Award nominee and multi-Platinum Icelandic blues/rock band, KALEO. “That experience made all those late nights trying to unlock the secrets of songwriting beyond worth it. To be a part of music at that level… man, it affirmed all the instincts that have led me down this path and really, inspired me to keep reaching for those higher moments of creatively and expression in my work.”
In his career, Ryan has also shared the stage with many critically acclaimed songwriters such as Grammy Award winner, Shelby Lynne, Ryan Montbleau, Bhi Bhiman, Richard Julian, The Guest and the Host, Lauren Shera, and Rolling Stone Magazine’s Top 100 Guitarist of All Time, Greg Ginn.
To combine the two things which uncompromisingly drive him, Bisio has embarked on an ambitious project, writing a book titled, The Musicality of the Game. A project which perfectly connect his unique life experiences. “This is the project I’ve waited my whole life to do. It feels like every little thing I’ve experienced has set the stage for this. The similarities between the two are vast, contoured, and the process has connected me to a deeper understanding of not only music and basketball, but the human experience.”
Bisio possesses a master’s degree in Coaching & Athletics Administration and has served as Director of Athletics and Dean of Discipline at St. Bernard’s Academy in Eureka, CA. He has also taught songwriting through the Arcata Art Institute.
Bisio is currently recording an album in Northern California. He hopes that the home-court recording sessions and collaborators will create a diverse and communal sound. He said with a laugh,” So far, it sounds like me, just all grown up. I guess if you’re in your 40’s, you should start to sound grown up!”
