Berlin
When it comes to making fully-realised house and techno, with a nod of respect and lots of romanticism for the past 30 years of dance music, there are only a handful of names that might come to mind. Quell is definitely one of them. His unique way of blending old and new elements in his productions, yet still be able to come up with a sound all his own, has earned him his stripes and a very steady spot at the forefront of modern electronic music.
From having released EPs on seminal, A-grade labels such
as 2020Vision, Tsuba, 4Lux, These Days Records and a full length album on the legendary Ibadan Records (home of Sydenham, Dennis Ferrer, Joe Claussell, Kerri Chandler etc.) he has since moved on down new paths with a rather diverse output - spanning a remix of Basement Jaxx’s single ‘Mermaid Of Salinas’ to a 4-tracker for the Parisian boutique label Skylax, always maintaining that distinct vein throughout, which makes his music
instantly recognisable.
Other, more recent yet very important, samples of his non-stop output are his latest 4 EPs, 'The Middle Class' on new Let's Play House imprint Room Service, 'The Ice Factory' on Huxley's Saints & Sonnets, 'Go Away, Humans!' on Waze & Odyssey's W&O Street Tracks and 'Tomahawk' on Music Is Love/MIL Records from Manchester. The list goes on, including another 2015 release, this time remixing Yousef's 'Let Go' off of the Liverpudlian producer's recent LP on Circus Recordings.
In terms of DJ-ing, anyone who has been present for one of Quell's DJ sets will know that he rarely abides by any rules and the level of his expertise, technically and as a selector, are second to none. Having stood in some of the world's most prestigious DJ booths and venues, Quell has gained the ability and skill set to go pretty much anywhere with his music, in order top pay respect to the crowds at his shows.
Quell has quite a few tricks up his sleeve for the last quarter of 2015. His contribution to Poker Flat Recordings’ ‘Forward To the Past’ complilations with his brand new track ‘Inside’, a 4-track EP on Circus and a brand new EP on Argy’s These Days Records.
This year will also see the beginning of Quell's brand new moniker 'Fringe Society' with releases coming up on Infinite Juju and plenty more to be confirmed. The idea behind the Greek-born/Berlin-based producer's brand new alias is to accommodate his darker, edgier left-of-centre productions.
