You can read ARA's press release on the horse meat scandal here: http://www.ara.org.au/news/472-press-release-horse-meat-scandal-creates-interest-in-vegan-options The interview took place on the 19th of February 2013 and he is interviewed by Howard Sattler on 6PR: http://www.6pr.com.au/shows/drive After this interview, someone contacted ARA and said that: 'I heard you on 6PR, and just like to clarify that in the English language "who" should only be used in reference to humans.' Nick's response: 'Thanks for listening in. Regarding the use of "who" in reference to both humans and other animals, I am very aware that "who" is most commonly used in reference only to humans. However, this takes place in a society that unfortunately views other animals as objects, something to be used rather than someone with interests and emotions. Language changes over time, and I think that as we learn more about animal sentience and discover that we share this world with thinking, feeling beings - rather than objects - this language will change.' http://sentience.org.au/ For more on speciesism (discrimination based on species), including avoiding speciesist language, see here: http://www.ara.org.au/animal-rights/speciesism
