Eleanor Stopps - In her own words by Mountainstone published on 2012-04-24T23:04:21Z Eleanor Stopps has been an environmental hero for decades. In the 1960s, she met Zella Schultz who shared her passion for birds. Zella showed Eleanor Protection Island, off Discovery Bay in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The island is home to about 80% of the nesting shorebirds of Puget Sound. The two set out to save the habitat from imminent development. Zella died before it became a reality. But Eleanor wouldn't give up. In 1982, Protection was named a National Wildlife Refuge by Congress and President Regan. Eleanor was named "Citizen of the Century" by Jefferson County, and has recieved numerous other awards. In 2010, Betsy Wharton and Jo Anne Bailey, sat down with Eleanor as part of the film, "Voices of the Strait". The following interview is Eleanor, in her own words. Genre Environmemental
