Born in Palma, Illes Balears, on 11 May 1977, Mateu Malondra Flaquer is a composer, guitarist, researcher, programmer, curator, and cultural manager, living between the Balearic Islands and the United Kingdom.
He has collaborated with leading musicians and ensembles including the Arditti String Quartet, Vertixe Sonora, Bcn216, dissonArt, Ensemble Exposé, Insomnio, MDI Ensemble, Plural Ensemble, Riot Ensemble, Vokalensemble NOVA, UMS’nJIP, Neus Estarellas, Mark Knoop, Takao Hyakutome, Tatsuki Narita, Jan Gerdes, and Pilar Fontalba, working under renowned conductors such as Gerry Cornelius, Beat Furrer, Yasuaki Itakura, Taco Kooistra, Fabián Panisello, Ulrich Pöhl, Roger Redgate, Robert HP Platz, J.M. Sánchez Verdú, and Michel Tabachnik.
His compositions have been performed at prestigious international festivals and forums, including Cairo Contemporary Music Days, Donaueschinger Musiktage – Next Generation, Forum Wallis, Gaudeamus Muziekweek, IMD-47 Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Festival Mixtur, Nacht der Neuen Musik, NUNC2!, Unerhörte Musik, Sintése, and Musikprotokoll-ORF, as well as in venues such as L’Auditori – Barcelona, BKA-Theater Berlin, Concertgebouw Brugge, MISE-EN-Place, Muziekcentrum First Philips, Studio Noru, Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall, and Spectrum, among others.
Malondra began his composition studies in Barcelona with David Padros and Christian de Jong. In 2004, he moved to Maastricht to pursue a BAMus and MMus in composition at ZUYD Maastricht Conservatory under Robert HP Platz, and also earned a BAMus in classical guitar performance at the Royal Conservatoire, The Hague, under Enno Voorhorst. He later completed PhD research at Kingston University, London, guided by Paul Archbold and Oded Ben-Tal, and was awarded the PhD in 2021 by Prof. Philip Grange and Prof. Roger Redgate. He has participated in masterclasses with Richard Barrett, Daniel D’Adamo, Brian Ferneyhough, Beat Furrer, and Wolfgang Rihm.
From 2016 to 2021, Malondra served as associate professor at the Conservatori Superior de les Illes Balears, teaching Mixed Media I–II and electroacoustic composition. Between 2019 and 2022, he was Cultural Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Institut d'Estudis Baleàrics (PC of the Illes Balears public sector). He founded and directed the ME_MMIX Festival (2013–2019), co-founded the non-profit association Placa Base, and coordinated the Placa Base Collective ensemble.
His music has been recorded and broadcast widely, including Takao Hyakutome's solo debut CD (Chanpd’Action), Tomeu Moll solo debut CD, Vokalensemble NOVA / Musikprotokoll CD – ORF, as well as on Netherlands National Radio 4, Concertzender.nl, and Relevant Tones – USA. His works have been performed in Egypt, Europe, Iceland, Japan, Mexico, the UK, and the USA.
Malondra is a recipient of a commission funded by the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung.
