@eleventhirtyeight: this is a remix that has been done with respect to the original, it shows the track in a different context & is therefore very relevant!

Am I imagining things or can I hear 'See Line woman' in this?

@Ole Smokey: great stuff and its the sort of mix that would get people interested in the artist who might not otherwise. Yep the context is all important in a mix like this. Played at the right time and a club would explode with this I'm sure.

@Walker G. If everyone took tunes that we expect to be remixed this whole site would suck. Thanks Jeremy for stretching out and remixing tom waits

@DJ Smash: agree with all this too. just want to say i was at the first, or one of the first nights of giant step and you and jazzy nice were spinning the tunes. i was on my first trip out to new york in 1990 and i met maurice who was a friend of my girlfriend. he told us about this night that was influenced by talking loud at dingwalls, so of course i was there with bells on. i remember having a chat and you or jazzy saying that people were more into the hip hop and you were trying to get them into the raregroove and jazz. amazing to see what you guys achieved in the years that followed, much respect.

@Jeremy Sole: completely agree. i've been a massive fan of tom waits for over 30 years, saw him live in 81, 85 and 87 and this is an amazing rework. it sounds like the drummer went back in the studio with waits and laid down a new drum track. well done mate. that said, if someone puts a house beat on a waits track i'll kill em! ha ha, just kidding

You blown me away with this. Could never sit through his diatribe. You've opened up a door I'm not sure I want to go through just yet. Damn though man that beat is just so... HOT. Amasing.

Great job, Jeremy. This was such a Giant Step anthem back in the day (wish I had this mix to work with back then).
Great to see it still inspires others to work it in their sets.

For the curious, The album it's from is called "Small Change' and the CD was just remastered and reissued (get it on Amazon.com).

Hey, Walker G... your argument seems noble but is kinda worn out.
As JS mentioned in his reply, A lot of us remixers get our motivation to do tracks in hope of finding a new audience for a tune and artist, a maybe to show some cross cultural/generational relevance.

With a classic.. it's not about trying to make it 'better'. It's about building on greatness, and not obscuring it with the results.
Hopefully, we become 'better' remixers, producers and/or DJs and listeners in the process.

It may be a better experience for you to continue listening to the original version, untouched, but someone unfamiliar with the song or artist or is simply open to fresh perspective doesn't have that baggage.
A remix of a classic like this inspires me to re-listen to the original version and gives me something more club friendly to play in my sets. Nuff said.. Ole'!

@walker_g: I can appreciate all the words you just said, except "should". Just like an original song is, a remix is a work of art. Art is always best understood in context, BUT can be just as fun (and fullfilling) when taken out of context too. I respectfully disagree with you on this one. I personally love the challenge of not only re-working songs that I can easily improve on, but taking songs that I already think are perfect, and carefully enhancing certain elements for maximum effect on modern day sound systems. When the sub speakers are independent from the tweeters. Adding low tones and cleaner highs can literally re-introduce a song to a whole new generation. THAT is something too important to me to remain a purist about the original sound quality.
