Ari Swan

Montreal-based violinist and composer Ari Swan began experimenting with composition and improvisation as a young child, practicing on an old organ in her family’s home. After starting violin lessons at age 9, eventually pursuing a degree from the University of Michigan in music. Since graduating, Ari has continued to perform as a classical and contemporary violinist, regularly appearing on albums and providing music for events. Ari Swan has made a name for herself as a collaborator with several indie-rock groups, including Little Scream, Folly and the Hunter, Heirloom, and Corinna Rose.

In September of 2013, Ari released her debut solo EP Symphony Plastique. Engineered and produced by Juno award winner Jamie Thompson (Esmerine,Unicorns), the album combines violin, voice, and percussion with electronic effects and unconventional recording techniques. The album has received praise from critics, who describe the music as “fun, playful, and at times intricate; a true symphonic debut” (CJLO Magazine) and “honest, accessible, and unique” (Cult MTL). In February of 2014, Ari was named one of Aux Magazine’s “11 Unconventional Canadian Singer-Songwriters You Need to Hear”. Ari Swan has appeared at several Montreal festivals, including Pop Montreal, One Man Band, and Suoni per il Popolo.

In addition to her work as a performer and composer, in 2014 Ari received her Masters in music education from McGill University. Her thesis explores the pedagogy and administration of a music improvisation workshop that she facilitated during her studies. The report serves as a “best-practices” for other pedagogues hoping to create similar initiatives or who are inspired to teach improvisation. She continues to teach group classes and private violin lessons. Her teaching philosophy focuses on creating an inclusive and flexible environment that encourages students to connect personally with the music.
