As a guitarist, composer, improviser, bandleader, interdisciplinary artist and creative producer Alex Roth is carving out a unique place for himself within the UK's contemporary music scene. Drawing inspiration from dance, film, literature and visual art as well as a wide range of musical traditions, Alex works across the jazz, improv, contemporary classical, alternative folk and electronic music communities with some of the leading artists of his generation.
Winner of the 2011 Dankworth Prize for Jazz Composition and the Musicians' Benevolent Fund Emerging Excellence Award, Alex was also named runner-up in the 2012 Deutsche Bank Awards for Creative Enterprises in Performance and Composition and has recently been shortlisted for a BASCA British Composer Award.
He leads or co-leads jazztronica quintet Otriad, electric guitar ensemble GUITARMAGEDDON!, ten-piece electro-acoustic chamber ensemble Sefiroth, improv quartet Blue-Eyed Hawk, collaborative trio Outrenoir, and the Joe Wright / Alex Roth Duo. He also performs regularly with the Alice Zawadzki Band, the Tom Millar Quartet, Chaos Orchestra and BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year finalist Catriona Price. Other collaborators have included Mark Lockheart, Kit Downes, Oren Marshall, Dave Morecroft, Ben Davis, Alex Bonney, Lauren Kinsella, Yurodny and London Sinfonietta.
“Alex Roth's guitar playing involves the fascinating creation of texture. He has absorbed the colours and vocabulary and trick-box of guitarists as diverse as Bill Frisell and Fred Frith, and can take the listener on a journey in every tune.” - Sebastian Scotney, LondonJazz blog
“Alex has a really unique approach as both a composer and a guitarist, using sonic colours and texture in a way I haven't often heard done as effectively since Mr Frisell first came onto the scene. With Otriad he has formed a great band in which all the musicians are fully tuned into his concept.” - Phil Robson
