Big Band by Zoran Scekic published on 2016-01-07T11:36:43Z The main idea of the concert 'Big Band Journey' is to present various forms and styles of orchestral Jazz music depending on geographical region and characteristic time periods. Concert consist of original compositions and rearrangements of characteristic ethnic themes. The program is chronologically organized in two parts with a pause in between: Part I Blues, Swing, Bebop & Cool The pause Part II Ethno, Fusion & Free First part of the concert covers four major periods of Jazz in America, presenting 12-bars blues, medium swing in a form of AABA, variation in up tempo and modal theme based on the symmetrical diminished scale and ostinato bass figure. Second part of the concert presents arrangements of ethnic motives from East Croatia (Slavonian dance), west Croatia ('Istrian dance)and Russian traditional song ('Evening bells'). Fusion of Jazz with popular or European classical and contemporary music is presented through compositions such as ‘When Stalker Becomes A Walker’, ‘Old Ringelspil’, ‘One’ and ‘Chamber & Combo’. The main characteristic featured on these compositions is: constant pulse, rich poly rhythm, altered harmony and slightly different orchestration. Composition ‘Trio’ is presenting direction of orchestral Free Jazz based on conceptual improvisation. Composition parameters such as dynamics, motor, register, instruments role and tempo are written with graphics and colors - everything else is improvised.
