Zach Gulaboff Davis

Zachary Gulaboff Davis received his B.A. in music, summa cum laude, from Linfield College, Oregon, with a dual concentration in Piano Performance and Composition/Theory. Currently, Zach is a Master of Music student in Composition at Mannes College of Music in New York City. His compositions are characterized by distinct and colorful harmonies, lyricism and meaningful dissonance, and an ever-present, unique sense of tonality.
As a composer, Zach’s music has been performed in such places as New York City, the Atlantic Music Festival, Mannes College of Music, Oregon Bach Festival, Sonoma State University, Linfield College, and many others. As a winner of the Vox Novus Competition, Zach’s Scherzo for piano was premiered by pianist Yumi Suehiro at the Composer’s Voice concert series in New York City in 2014, with a work for string quartet following a year later. In 2014, Zach’s Piano Concerto No. 1 was premiered at Linfield College with Dr. Albert Kim as the soloist. Zach’s Sonata for Viola and Piano won the 2013 American Federation of Music Club’s competition for chamber music. Davis frequently performs his own compositions at various venues. He has studied composition with Dr. Richard Bourassa and David Tcimpedis, and has also participated in masterclasses with Lowell Liebermann, Robert Kyr, Libby Larsen, and Stephen Hartke. Zach teaches piano, composition, and music theory privately and has been an intern instructor for class piano, theory, and chamber music courses at Linfield College.
As a pianist, Zach has been featured as a concerto soloist, chamber musician, and solo performer, and has performed at such places as the Portland International Piano Festival, Atlantic Music Festival, Oregon Bach Festival, and New York City. Among other awards, Zach has won the concerto competitions of the Salem Youth Symphony and Linfield Chamber Orchestra; he has also placed first in the keyboard division of the Salem Chamber Orchestra concerto competition, second in the collegiate division of the Oregon Music Teacher’s Association piano competition, and was awarded honorable mention in the Oregon Symphonies’ Wiscarson Concerto Competition. Zach has studied piano with Dr. Albert Kim, Prof. Chris Engbretson, Dr. Jill Timmons, and Dr. Elise Yun.
Also an orchestral percussionist, Zach has been the timpanist for the Linfield Concert Band, Salem Youth Symphony, and was the student intern and percussionist for the Willamette Valley Symphony during its 2012-2013 season.
Aside from music, Zach completed minors in mathematics and education while at Linfield, and in 2011, his Linfield team for the COMAP Mathematics Competition was awarded the prestigious Meritorious award. In his spare time, Zach competes in American Kennel Club sports with his dogs, where he has received national recognition multiple times. He is also an AKC agility judge. Zach also has a keen interest in aviation, spending time outdoors, and working with children.
