In continuation of their fall electronic scheduling, NYC/LA based label Youngbloods welcomes Brooklyn producer @Jacob2-2 (aka motion designer and animator David Ahuja) to their roster with his sophomore full-length album, Dashed Marked Crossed. The long-awaited follow up to his acclaimed 2013 LP “Herbivore” on King Deluxe, Jacob 2-2 hurdles through a contrasting world full of chaos and caricature, bending bright synth stabs and spacious club rhythms to his will as both a reactionary protest to life’s mounting pressures and a celebration of its natural disorder.
Building on his signature collisional funk, Dashed Marked Crossed puts the Atlanta native’s virtuosic synth work on full display. With now two albums, four EPs, and countless singles and remixes to his name, Jacob 2-2 has spent nearly a decade building a universe all his own. Still fundamentally uncanny, his historically glossy, energetic music finds itself now embracing a darker atmosphere. Once likened by Dummy Magazine to an “endless summer holiday,” the music of Dashed Marked Crossed retains the vibrant maximalism Jacob 2-2 is known for but sheds the idyllic dream state and reflects in its highly-detailed architecture a world gone awry.
With the charismatic prelude “The F Word,” Jacob 2-2 wastes no time setting the disenchanted tone of the album. Written over the last three years, the album moves frantically through its wide and variable course, challenging the listener to hold on with highlights “Dusk Hits Akihabara” before sedating and seducing with cooler numbers like “Dear God”, featuring vocalist and OPOLOPO collaborator Amalia. Parallel to the global rise in turmoil, the album was written in piecemeal, a puzzle of catharsis put together in-between Ahuja’s travels (and tours) in Europe, Japan, and eventually a pilgrimage to India. In turn, Dashed Marked Checked curves sharply, repeatedly, from manic peaks to disorienting, distorted lows, where jagged bursts of emotion erupt and then melt away. But amidst the insatiable chaos, Ahuja still plants buoys of optimism, showing off his lightning quick finger work with bright, melody-drunk anthems.
A lenticular postcard of the rollercoaster of contemporary life, Dashed Marked Crossed dispels of the saccharine, embraces the complex, and seeks solace in spite. Over 15 songs and nearly an hour of thunderous hi-fi ballads, it is the story of a childhood necessarily left behind once the storm takes hold.
Dashed Marked Crossed will be available through all digital platforms on Friday 28 September.
Jacob 2-2 will be on tour in Japan to celebrate the release, with shows in Osaka on 26 September at Cats (above Circus Osaka, with Metome, Kafuka, Mightwhales), and Kyoto on 28 September at Cafe La Siesta (with Mightwhales, DJ Tropic Thunder, Dawu, Agargara, Ally Mobbs, and DJ Master Kohta).
