048 - Contact by You Are Not So Smart published on 2015-04-25T22:29:47Z Can you change a person's mind on a divisive social issue? The latest science says...yes. But it will require two things: contact and disclosure. In this episode you'll travel to Mississippi to see how professional mind changers are working to shift attitudes on LGBT rights, and you'll learn how a man in Los Angeles conducted 12,000 conversations until he was able to perfect the most powerful version of contact possible. In one 22-minute chat, Dave Fleischer can change people's minds on issues they've felt strongly about for decades, and change them forever. Genre psychology Comment by VenJohn dat open pastor saying the bible can say wtv you want it to say. He's no pastor from that moment on. 2015-07-07T05:56:20Z Comment by Andrew Moody Have you come across this? http://www.thisamericanlife.org/blog/2015/05/canvassers-study-in-episode-555-has-been-retracted 2015-05-21T02:18:38Z Comment by drillvoice exposure is different to contact - great insight. 2015-05-20T10:05:39Z Comment by Twist of Lime A very enjoyable program. Easy to listen to and follow. 2015-05-06T23:18:37Z Comment by HisssyFits To be accurate the pastor didn't actually yell at you. He addressed you but was not "yelling." I don't agree with the guy on the subject but to characterize him as yelling misrepresents the event. 2015-05-01T21:04:54Z Comment by furanku2 This mirrors my experience quite well. I grew up in the Deep Baptist South, and was reflexively anti-gay. I wouldn't have gone out and beat people up, but would certainly have opposed gay marriage had it been on the radar 20 years ago. Then I met a fellow in Japan teaching Englsih with me. We became friends, and then one day when seeing something on the newspaper about a gay rights parade in Tokyo, He said, "BTW, I'm gay." Mind blown. And it clicked. He didn't pursue it, but it was certainly on my mind...and I realized I didn't care. He was a friend and that replaced any stereotypes I might have had. 2015-04-30T04:35:32Z Comment by Sed Franklin Good stuff 2015-04-29T23:05:26Z Comment by Ian Handsley Love your podcasts but your voice sounds lossy. The high freqs are crunchy and it gets tedious to listen to for over an hour. It might only be SC's crappy conversion algorithm but you'd sound much better with a higher rez upload (or a better mic). 2015-04-28T02:16:06Z Comment by Ron Proctor Nice work. As you probably know, the mormon church was a big proponent of Prop 8. As a member of the church in Utah, I was told to donate time and money to influence the Prop 8 vote. That broke too many boundaries and was the breaking point that caused me to leave the church. It is inspiring to hear about Fleischer's very healthy response to something so unhealthy. 2015-04-26T16:56:10Z Comment by Leon Huene this was a brilliant mind bending episode o: thank you 2015-04-26T13:02:31Z Comment by Nada TekneKat Thanks for this podcast. 2015-04-26T05:36:47Z
