China and India, both fast-growing economies, take different paths on nurturing art. In recent years, China’s government has encouraged creation of thousands of museums, demonstrating enduring Chinese culture and signaling the nation’s cultural centrality. Museums play a less central role in India, where government’s role is less than that of individuals and corporations. Asia offers new ground for thrilling competition in art’s soft power.
