Russell Rickford, Enrique Gonzales-Conty and Gerardo Veliz Carrillo Jan. 1 by WRFIhumanrightsshow published on 2021-01-01T22:53:32Z We talk about the history of racism and policing in this country and the recent organizing efforts to fight against police brutality and defund police departments. The Tompkins County Antiracist Coalition issued the "Reimagining Public Safety" statement last December. The coalition is concerned that initiatives proposed by city council at the local level are a form of rebranding without addressing underlying issues. Alternatives are envisioned to come from the community, where restorative justice models can be implemented. Funding currently spent on law enforcement could be diverted to the community, for example to help deal with unemployment, education, health care etc. In addition to being members of the Antiracist Coalition, Russell Rickford is active in DSA, Enrique Gonzales-Conty in the TCIRC, and Gerardo Veliz Carrillo in No More Tears.
