At 560 square miles the site is described as the most contaminated nuclear site in the country with an estimated one million gallons of nuclear waste leaked into the soil at present date. The facility was created in the 1940’s as part of the Manhattan Project. The site produced the plutonium for the trinity test, the first atomic blast. The site also produced the plutonium for the Fat Man bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki. Last week the department of energy reported the rate of which the leak at the site was occurring. Carpenter spoke with WORT about the current strategies being implemented to cleanup the area.
