America's Legacy of Torture, and Gina Haspel's Confirmation Hearing by WORT 89.9FM Madison published on 2018-05-11T20:11:22Z Host Esty Dinur chats about Gina Haspel, the controversial nominee to become the permanent Director of the CIA who had her confirmation hearing this week, and who has faced intense criticism over her involvement in torture at a CIA black site in Thailand in 2002. First, we speak with journalist Brett Wilkins, who wrote about the history of torture in the United States for CounterPunch. Then we speak with Ray McGovern, a former CIA analyst for 27 years, in which he chaired the National Intelligence Estimates and prepared the President's Daily Brief. He's now an activist on intelligence-related issues, and this week at Haspel's confirmation hearing, he was forcibly removed and subsequently arrested for protesting Haspel’s history of waterboarding. His recent piece on the issue is titled "Will a Torturer Become CIA Director?"
