Shellmound by WinstonTaneous published on 2012/08/01 02:57:08 +0000 This is a song I'm not sure how to classify, I'll call it a "celestial download." Made for "Notes On the Wind," a multimedia collaboration with Jen Jastrab and Catherine Baumgartner. From January - July 2012, we created a site-specific piece about the marina in Emeryville, CA. We visited the marina every couple weeks, meeting people, communing with nature, creating art, making audio/video recordings. The process inspired me to write a number of pieces celebrating the wind and waves, the sunlight, and other aspects of the site. I wanted to make something that acknowledged the Native American presence in Emeryville, where a mall now sits on an ancient sacred shellmound. Since reading David Abrams "Spell of the Sensuous" I've been exploring the ritual power of chanting on different vowel sounds. I recorded several wordless vocal chants that fit the mood, and felt like they came from the Native spirit of the place. I processed a track of whistling and received the image of a bear and a duck teasing a hunter with their whistles. Yes, I'm a cosmic art-school hippie! This piece came from a place beyond me, I hope it transports you there, too!
