It's "love at first flight" at the 2013 QuickCheck New Jersey Festival of Ballooning, the largest summertime hot air balloon and music festival in North America, July 26-28, with morning and evening ascensions (6:30am) of more than 100 balloons from around the world. This year's new signature special shaped balloon is "Flighthouse," a 115 foot tall flying lighthouse to promote the "restore the shore" efforts. Additional balloons include the world's largest free-flying flag, Pea-Nut, a 100 foot tall inverted flying elephant, a 105 foot Elvis, and much more. Catch a taste of ballooning with a tethered ride in a balloon that stays close to the ground and overlooks the entire festival grounds. REO Speedwagon, Big & Rich, Blues Traveler and R5 featuring Ross Lynch from the Disney Channel, perform, along with human cannonball Jennifer "The Cannon Lady" Smith, a 5K race, fireworks, a nighttime balloon glow, arts and craft vendors, food and more, at Solberg Airport, Readington, NJ, north of Princeton.
The 19th annual Peoples' Festival pays tribute to Bob Marley in his first American hometown, Wilmington, Delaware, Saturday, July 27, noon-10pm, with live music, international food, worldwide arts and crafts, and performances by LUCIANO, Jah Works, Spokey Speaky, I-Kronic and more, Tubman-Garret Riverfront Park, Water Street. The party continues at World Café Live at the Queen and a concert with Weekday Warriors, 10:30pm, 500 N. Market Street, Wilmington.
The 1st Philadelphia One-Minute Play Festival is coming to InterAct Theatre Company for three performances only, Monday, July 29, Tuesday, July 30, and Wednesday, July 31, all at 8pm. The New York based company The One-Minute Play Festival (OMPF) has collaborated with InterAct for the past year to feature over 70 brand new one minute plays by close to 50 Philadelphia playwrights, selected by invitation. Playwrights include P. Seth Bauer, Madi DiStefano, Elizabeth Scanlon, Seth Rozin, Bill D'Agostino and many more. The production also includes over 30 actors and directors including Tina Brock, Liam Castellan, and Daniel Student. The plays are organized thematically and seek to represent both local cultures and varying points of view, 2030 Sansom Street, Philadelphia.
The BlackStar Film Festival returns to Philadelphia for a 2nd year, August 1-4, celebrating film by and about people of African descent at International House Philadelphia, The Barnes Foundation, and Drexel University, among other venues. Films include Nairobi Halflife, Yelling to the Sky, Mother of George, and more. The festival highlights films that are often overlooked from emerging, established, and mid-career directors, writers and producers working in narrative, documentary, experimental and music video filmmaking. New this year, a children and family film block, youth directed films, as well as a film competition, which includes a screenplay competition with scripts read live by actors and juried by industry professionals. Also, a just released short film featuring prominent actors paying tribute to Trayvon Martin on opening night and a Q&A with Hank Willis Thomas, Bayete Ross Smith, and Omari Hardwick.
Musikfest 2013 kicks off next Friday, August 2-11 with 10 days of concerts on 14 stages, and more than 300 performances including Darius Rucker, Ke$ha, Carly Rae Jepsen, OneRepublic, Skillet, George Thorogood, Styx/Foreigner, KC & the Sunshine Band, Lucy Kaplansky, and many more in venues in downtown Bethlehem, PA. Many performances free. Additional activities include artisans, food, children's activities, theme days and more.
