C. Everett Koop began his appointment as Surgeon General of the U. S. Public Health Service in 1982. Previously, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services and as surgeon-in-chief at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia. As surgeon general, he oversees the activities of the 7,200-member Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. In keeping with his responsibility to inform the public on major health hazards, he has become a national educator on AIDS.
