Arahant: A pali term meaning “the Slayer of Demons” or “the Deathless One”, an honorific title given to the Buddha.
Through the past 10 years the Electronic Music movement has made an unprecedented impact on our culture, growing from the warehouses of Detroit and eventually finding its way to centre stage at the Grammies. Through these shifts and turns Anthony Traynor has plotted his own trajectory and developed an uncanny ability to catch the wave before it hits. In his previous incarnation as BreakBeatBuddha he was lauded as one of the founders of the Cali Glitch Hop scene, working with the likes of Bassnectar, Freq Nasty and supported by such luminaries as the Glitch Mob. As “PropaTingz” he was one of the early champions of the US Dubstep sound, working with such heavy weights as 16-Bit and gaining support from UKF, N- type, Akira Kiteshi and Datsik. His production work can be seen on labels such as Fabric, BOKA, Black Acre, PLAY ME as well as on his own TRUE MOVEMENT Imprint.
The impact of the initial UK warehouse raves he attended as a youth were nothing short of transformational, embodying a revolutionary zeitgeist which he believes remains at its core. In his present incarnation as “Deathless” we see him moving into live territory and making a personal idiosyncratic statement as he says...
“For me the original meaning of electronic music has been watered down by marketing and big business. It’s overwhelming how much music is out there right now, and I feel that it’s all about coming back to live performance and a genuine artistic statement. I felt the need to make something which touched upon my own personal interests, that dealt with the shifts happening around me whilst still remaining current in terms of style. I’ve been craving for that meaning in my own life, and I think that’s a reflection of where we are in the western world in general. I want to create from that desire rather than dumb it down to fit into a genre”.
His first offering, “THROUGH DEATH UNITED”, is a three-part EP that fuses Bass Music, Melodic Trap, Dusbtep and Drum ‘n’ Bass. The vibe shifts confidently between inspirational and atmospheric, pensive and moody to critical and political with vocal contributions from Anthony and LA’s “the Beautiful Conspiracy”. The EP successfully manages to cross over without losing its allegiance to the underground sound and offers a deeper, more engaging articulation of modern styles. To publicize the release and give form to the performance the EP is accompanied with a video for the single “We Won’t Go Away” (to view please click on this link).
Through collaborations with other artists, the use of sound, lyric, light and performance, it is his goal to infuse his music with a meaning that has been obscured in the present climate, embodying the transformational intentions first discovered years ago. It’s with this outlook that “DEATHLESS” seeks to capture our own historical moment and our own “Spirit of the Times”.
