"Seriously, can we please get this woman a major record deal, folks? As always, there’s an awesome timelessness to her music – one of those things that seems easy but is actually incredibly difficult to pull off.....These songs reside in that liminal state between the two: the bright flickering present, weighted down by the obligations of past and future and yet still struggling to be free." - Heartache with Hard Work
"Peters' metaphor-rich songs remind me of Josh Ritter, perhaps not in sound or style, but in the depth and substance of her skillfully crafted lyrics. The Burden of Unshakeable Proof finds Peters, backed by a full band, exploring matters of the head and heart in ten indie-pop-flavored folk-rock tunes that are often melancholy but from a reflective rather than gloomy perspective. Then again, lyrics alone don't make a great album and Peters is equally skilled at setting her words to hook-filled melodies, which she delivers with restrained yet crystal clear vocals." - No Depression
"For most songwriters, they are lucky to manage a line or two in a song that so resonates with the listener that it speaks a core truth to them. Then, there are songwriters like Vanessa Peters, who are capable of writing full songs that speak such truth. “206 Bones” is undeniably such a song. The first verse in particular weighs as heavy on my heart as the spare keys she sings of. Even the simplistic chorus of “206 bones, only one heart”, under Peters’ engaging voice (which earned her a Reader’s Ghosty for Best Female Vocalist), becomes a surprisingly powerful statement." - Ghost of Blind Lemon
"The result — The Burden of Unshakeable Proof — unfurls across 10 gorgeously sculpted tracks, a blissful shuffling of folk, pop and jazz bound together by Peters’ peerless voice." - Fort Worth Star Telegram
"For its subject matter, The Burden of Unshakeable Proof is a buoyant and lively collection of songs, a hug of knowing enlivened by the inviting voice of Peters. Future generations may refute Peters’ claim that “I am not a script you’re gonna study / I’m not a lesson to be learned” for The Burden of Unshakeable Proof is a master class in probing matters of the heart." - Bucket Full of Nails
“The Burden of Unshakeable Proof” was recorded by producer Rip Rowan (Old 97s, Rhett Miller) and features performances from Grammy-winning guitarist Joe Reyes and Italian guitar hero Daniele Fiaschi. Dallas's star producer (and bassist) Salim Nourallah and local whiz-kid drummer Jason Garner (Polyphonic Spree) also lent their talents to the record.
For the record Vanessa chose 10 songs that were tied together by the common threads of determination in the face of despair and the willingness to shed the shackles of the past in order to move forward. Both “Delicate” and “Mending Fences” deal with feelings of being overwhelmed by the crush of today’s fast-paced life; “Cage” is the story of modern relationships that play out on the screen for all the world to see, and “Paralysis Bug” is a song that anyone who has ever struggled to get out of bed will understand. But there are moments of hope, too: “Let’s Do This” is a buoyant, energetic pop gem full of courage and chutzpah, and “Atmosphere” is a soft, gauzy love song held up in the sky by the underpinnings of a gorgeous, swelling guitar line.
