Carmelo Torres y su Cumbia Sabanera Carmelo Torres San Jacinto, Bolívar Carmelo Torres is an accordion player and composer considered as one of the main protagonists in the story of Colombian Cumbia. He is the living legacy of Cumbia Sabanera, a style within the Accordion Sabanero music, conglomerate of genres that characterize the rural area from San Jacinto, Montes de María, in the south of Cartagena, Caribbean coast of Colombia. Torres grew up in a region steeped in musical history, known for its gaiteros and great musicians, such as Gaiteros de San Jacinto, the clarinetist and composer Lucho Bermúdez, Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto and the ‘King of Cumbia’ and Andrés Landero who taught Carmelo the secrets and mysteries of Cumbia Sabanera for several years. In a time of commercial accordion music such as Vallenato, or the new styles of Cumbia, Carmelo Torres’ music represents the music of the pueblo, or countryside, where he sings of work, nature, life and love. Its local character has taken it to the global scope: With a great succeed in México, Costa Rica, Argentina, France, Spain and Colombia, his music is danced in nightclubs of the new generations, looking back and forth alternately in the same song.
