The industrial New Wave sound was a high-energy mix of edgy lyrics, dissonant melodies, and occasional tongue-in-cheek humor, reminiscent of Laurie Anderson and Talking Heads. When the album was released in 1983, the WASP record label acknowledged to radio stations that some would find this combination to be new and even “difficult.” However, the album stood up well over time, and its use of foreign languages and complex rhythms foretold what was to come.
